I’m Maddy (she/her/they), an art therapist who specializes in working with children, adolescents, and adults navigating trauma, life transitions, emotional challenges, identity development, the impact of chronic stress, & more!
You deserve a space where you can show up authentically as you are! I want you to feel like you don’t have to wear a mask when we’re together, because I value your authentic self.
I started Handmade Healing because I believe healing happens when we use our hands! Whether by making art, playing, or even holding onto EMDR tappers!
We might work well together if…
You’re looking for a therapist who is friendly, compassionate, and a tad bit quirky! And if you don’t mind your therapist rocking a t-shirt and jeans, especially if they have a paint stain or two.
Who I Work With
I work with clients across the lifespan! I value the wide range of experiences across the age spectrum and I have a background in child and family development.
Although there are differences in how I show up as a therapist depending on my client’s age or development, most of the time, it isn’t all that different from one another.
-
When children enter the therapy space with me, I meet them where they’re at. Usually telling stories with miniatures, making crafts, playing games, and (my favorite) putting on a show with a silly voice and puppets in hand.
Although I am often showing up as the playful, silly, and creative therapist, there are times where children share vulnerable feelings and stories. During those times, I aim to be a gentle presence for kids to feel safe to express their authentic self. I also ensure to hear from parents and caregivers as often as I can! I want to help my young clients and I can’t do that without the support of their families.
-
Adolescents and teenagers may not be as interested in using imaginative play. But I continue to utilize a playful approach with teenagers in the therapy room! Many of my tween and teen clients love to talk while we work on an art project, make bracelets, or even knead clay.
Parents are still invited to their teen’s therapy but confidentiality is essential for teen clients! I usually explain, “I won’t tell your parents that you didn’t like their mashed potatoes, I will tell your caregivers general updates and what we’re working on.”
-
The work I do with adults, although creative and playful, is often focused more on the specific issues. Many of my adult clients struggle with childhood trauma or chronic health issues (e.g., POTS, Chron’s, etc.). Some of my adult clients are creatives (e.g., artists, writers, film students, etc.).
I tell my adult clients, “I think working with kids makes me a better adult therapist. That is because when adults share stories about their experiences from a young age, I have a frame of reference for how small they really were!”
